Overview
The UCLA Early Academic Programs are committed to providing opportunities to enhance program participants’ academic performance, prepare for required standardized examinations, and allow them to experience the university through our series of Saturday Academies and Summer Academic Boot Camps. This year, we are offering a wide variety of educational academies meant to stimulate academic growth and assist students as they become competitive for admissions to the university. Our goal is to provide interactive, challenging extra-curricular programs that will stimulate student achievement and give students access to our university.
PSAT Workshop – October 13, 2007 (9am-4pm)
Target Population – 300 8th grade UC-Bound, 10th and 11th grade EAOP who are registered for the PSATTargeted students from our high schools will be invited to attend this event on UCLA’s campus. Through workshops conducted by Ivy West instructors, students will receive instruction on both the math and verbal sections of the PSAT in preparation for the October administration of the PSAT. This academy is extremely important for the student attempting to gain valuable test-taking strategies as well as attempting to gain familiarity with the test format.
Academic Prep Academy – February 23/March 15/March 29, 2008 (9am-1pm)
Target Population – 500 newly selected UC-Bound and CBOP 9th/10th grade students from ALL SCHOOLS
The Academic Prep Academy is designed to strengthen students writing skills by preparing them for the SAT I Writing Test. Ivy West instructors will conduct class sessions meant to explore the exam and provide helpful tips for improving performance.
Parent College Conference – February 23/March 15/March 29, 2008 (9am-1pm)
Target Population – 500 EAOP parents
This event is used to demystify the college admissions process and give parents critical information to assist their children. Parents will receive college preparation and information on the following topics: college admissions requirements, 4 systems of higher education, college entrance examinations, concurrent enrollment, summer program opportunities, scholarship information, and financial aid sources. Workshops in English and Spanish will take place.
MESA/EAOP Math/Science Academy – April 19, 2008 (9am-3pm)
Target Population – 300 9th and 10th grade EAOP students
Our goal for this academy is to build our students math and science abilities while at the same time introducing students to various career opportunities that are available through math and science degrees. Math and science workshops will be conducted by instructors identified by MESA/CEED.
Literature/Writing Academy – May 31, 2008 (9am-3pm)
Target Population – 300 9th and 10th grade EAOP students
Students who participate in this event will receive instruction from UCLA Center X instructors and/or high school instructors on the basics of writing and analytical reading. Special attention will be paid to helping students develop their thesis and topic sentences and then showing them how to strengthen their thesis with supporting detail.
Fidelity Proposal Activities 2007-08
The projects prepared for the EAOP Family Inclusion Initiative support family empowerment, enhance community building, and help families build their children’s academic identity, thereby increasing academic achievement and school engagement. Support from Fidelity Investments for the EAOP Family Inclusion Initiative is allowing EAOP to both enhance current services to thousands of parents and students and provide new ones in the regions of San Diego, Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area. Projects target middle and high school students and their families in the core areas of college knowledge, academic advising, exam preparation, and academic enrichment.
4 Middle School Regional Parent Meetings – October, 2007-April, 2008
Middle School students and their parents will have an opportunity to participate in regional college preparatory workshops in their respective communities. The goal of these workshops is to show middle school students (grades 6 to 8) and their parents how to prepare for college. Participants will attend presentations on the college admissions requirements for all segments of higher education, including UC, CSU, community college and independent schools; learn about the UC/CSU A-G requirements, college entrance exams, the various financial aid sources to pay for college (scholarships, grants, work-study and loans), and the FAFSA. Workshops are conducted in English and Spanish.
Parent Overnight Stay at UCLA Guest House – July 2008
The Parent Summer Residential Program would bring 25-30 EAOP parents who have little or no college experience to a two-day/one-night summer residential program on the UCLA campus. The program will provide them an opportunity to experience the residential college life that their students will experience when they enroll in college. While receiving all of the pertinent college preparatory information like A-G, SAT/ACT, choosing a college, financial aid resources in a classroom format, parents would also participate in hands on types of college readiness activities. These activities would include learning how to navigate the college campus, understanding the resources available to support the undergraduate education and making the most out of the student’s undergraduate experience both academically and socially.
Passport to the Future – February 17, 2008
Passport to the Future features workshops, panel presentations by college students, a tour of the campus, and the opportunity to attend a UCLA athletic event such as basketball, gymnastics, or track and field, for middle school students and their families. The goal of this event is to provide middle school students and their parents an opportunity to participate in a college conference at UCLA that is designed to promote an understanding of college options (UC, CSU, community college and independent schools), college admission requirements (A-G) and financial aid and financial planning for college (scholarships, grants, work-study and loans).
6-8 Sophomore Assessments – March-June, 2008
The goal of this event is for EAOP staff to develop individualized academic plans (IAP) for participating EAOP 10th graders. Parents of EAOP 10th graders will be invited to join their students at this all-day event in an effort to make them aware of their child’s academic plan. In this way, families can reinforce the plan, as well as ensure that their child’s classes meet UC eligibility requirements. Parental involvement will both strengthen support for students to get and stay on track to college, and also encourage parents to reinforce the advising given to their children.
