Entrance Requirements for Freshman

  • Subject and GPA
  • Test

No subject requirements; must be 18 years old or a high school graduate.

High school graduate; Meet eligibility index, minimum of 2.0 gpa; full pattern of subject requirements completed w/C or better(see over). All grades count except P.E. and ROTC (grades 10-12).

A-G academic subject requirements (see over), completed w/C or better.  At least a 3.0 GPA and meet eligibility index; Only UC approved courses calculated in gpa (grades 10-12)

Prefer students who have met UC entrance requirements.  Above 2.0 GPA.

 

No college entrance exams required; college placement exams to enroll in certain courses are administered

UC A-G ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS
a. History/Social Science - 2 years required
 
Two years of history/social science to include: one year of U.S. history or one-half year of U.S. history and one-half year of civics or American government; and one year of world history, cultures, and geography.
b.
English - 4 years required
 
Four years of college preparatory English that includes frequent and regular writing, and reading of classic and modern literature, and poetry. Not more than two semesters of grade 9 English can be used to meet this requirement.
c.
Mathematics - 3 years required, 4 recommended
 
Three years, including elementary algebra, geometry, and second year (advanced) algebra. Mathematics courses taken in grades 7 and 8 (with a minimum grade of C) may be used to fulfill part of this requirement if the high school accepts them as equivalent to its own courses.
d.
Laboratory Science - 2 years required, 3 recommended
 
Two years of laboratory science providing fundamental knowledge in at least two of these three areas: biology, chemistry, and physics. Lab courses in earth/space sciences are acceptable if they have as prerequisites or provide basic knowledge in biology, chemistry, or physics. Two years of an approved integrated science program may be used to fulfill this requirement. Not more than one year of grade 9 lab science can be used to meet this requirement.
e.
Language Other than English - 2 years required, 3 recommended
 
Two years of the same language other than English. Courses should emphasize speaking and understanding, and include instruction in grammar, vocabulary, reading, and composition.
f.
Visual and Performing Arts – 1 year required
 
Freshmen entering UCLA in fall 2003 may satisfy this requirement by completing two semesters of approved arts courses from any of the four VPA areas which include dance, drama/theater, music or visual art.

Freshmen entering in fall 2004 or fall 2005 must satisfy the requirement by completing two semesters of approved arts courses from a single VPA area. [Students should consult their high school guidance counselor when selecting courses to fulfill this requirement.]

Freshmen entering in fall 2006 and later must complete a single yearlong VPA course in one discipline.
g.
College Preparatory Electives - 1 year required
 
One unit (two semesters), in addition to those required in “a-f” above, chosen from the following areas: visual and performing arts, history, social science, English, advanced mathematics, laboratory science, and language other than English (a third year in the language used for the “e” requirement or two years of another language).
